On
June 13th 2000, The European Commission adopted a proposal for a
Directive on Waste Electrical
and Electronic Equipment
(WEEE).
Electrical
and electronic equipment has been identified as one of the fastest
growing waste streams in the European union and estimated that
this will increase by between 16 - 28% every 5 years - three times
faster than the growth of average municipal waste.
This
is largely due to the advancement in technology and the “throw
away” culture in which we live. “If it ain't broke don’t fix
it" ... BUT, even if an electrical item is not broken, we just
have a tendency to want, or be forced to need (just to keep up in
business) the latest, up-to-date technology!
AND,
even if broken, rather than have it repaired, since it is quite
likely to be out-of-date after just six months, we are more likely
to purchase new and throw away the old.

The
WEEE Directive is designed to
prevent the sheer volume of this type of waste from just being
buried in the ground for future generations to suffer - www.environment-agency.gov.uk
(specific page can be found by clicking HERE).
You
name it, from the mountains of old fridges requiring very
specialist disposal in order to contain escaping ozone depleting
gases, to smaller household appliances such as toys, toasters and
even toothbrushes - if they are electric they will be categorised
in the WEEE Directive.
This includes mobile phones.
